Use the map and data explorer below to explore the SWARMatlas database
The Map
The map has two tabs (Institutions & Datasets) and two views (Simple & Satellite) which you can switch between at the top.
Institutions shows where our contributors are currently based. Click an institution to see who contributed from there and what datasets they shared.
Datasets shows where each dataset was collected. Click a point to see more details.
The data explorer
Overview: headline figures for the atlas, and how datasets break down by animal group, tracking method, setting and country.
Explore: Make simple comparisons by counting datasets by any characteristic (e.g. tracking method) and splitting them by another (e.g. animal group). The distributions chart shows the range of sampling frequencies, sample sizes and durations across the atlas.
Species: look up any species to see a summary of everything SWARMatlas holds on it, including datasets, methods, contributors and papers.
Data: the full catalogue as a searchable, sortable table, which you can download as a CSV.
Some Notes on the above
Individual tracks vs individuals: in some datasets, individual animals may be assigned several IDs during the tracking period (e.g. if they leave and re-enter view of a video). Minimum individuals counts only datasets where IDs are consistent throughout.
Locations: some study sites are shown at reduced precision to protect sensitive species and sites (i.e. the location of a national park instead of the actual coordinates within)
Accessing data: the explorer shows what SWARMatlas holds but not the data itself.
Updates: the atlas is updated regularly at the end of every month as new datasets are added and processed.
